You raise some very good (and interesting points) on the nature of evil, the defacto definition of what the one ring really IS.
Comparing it to the Dark Side... that's a bit flawed, I gotta say. Yes, both were avoided by those who knew better. But anyone could snatch up the one ring, and those that wanted it were legion (working for the big S, yeah). As for the dark side... only two were willing to use it, and they had a better understanding of it than those pesky humans and the ring. Well: two at a time, anyway.
That, and the ring could be destroyed. The dark side isn't going anywhere.
It's about POWER. Unmitigated (love that word) power. And how it corrupts absolutely. Evil... great evil (not just the stuff for its own sake), is the removal of all concern for consequences.
